Dear Senator McCain,
I am writing this letter with no realistic thought that you will ever come across this appeal to your campaign. However, I am trying to express my deep concern about your upcoming decision to pick a Vice Presidential running mate. The act of writing this presents me with the opportunity for a cathartic experience as I relate to you my observations from an average citizen who wants to see your campaign succeed and succeed in an honorable fashion.
First, I must express my deep respect for you as a person, for your love of country, and for your willingness to sacrifice for a cause greater than yourself. There is no reason for you to pontificate about your motives or to try to convince anyone of your patriotism and love of our great republic. Your actions have spoken louder than any speech read from a teleprompter. Many times I have disagreed with you and many times I have questioned your conservative credentials. But I can assure you I have always respected your political courage. I have grown to admire you even more during the course of the primary campaign even though I was an enthusiastic supporter of the Governor of Arkansas. I appreciated the fact that you chose not to run attacks on your fellow Republicans, as did most of the other candidates.
But there was one candidate who chose to break the 11th commandment of Ronald Reagan. Immediately, he turned on the Governor of Arkansas when he won the Iowa caucuses and then on you as you won the state of New Hampshire. It was no surprise to me. This is a man who has promoted himself more than he has promoted his country. This is a man who has held three positions on abortion in 15 years and whose wife contributed to the Planned Parenthood organization when he was governor of Massachusetts. He has proven that his political positions are formed not by core convictions deep in his soul but by the prevailing beliefs of the group he is courting for votes. There are other examples such as his pandering to gay rights groups in Massachusetts and his love for tax hikes or should I say “fees.” I truly believe that he is a political creature who will say and do anything to gain and hold onto position and power. He is a self-promoter and he is not willing to dedicate himself to a greater cause. He is looking for a cause or position to make “himself greater.” You saw through this during the campaign and it was clear that you found his political tactics repulsive. Senator, you are an honorable man and I hope that you can find someone just as honorable to stand by you in your run to the White House. As I stated you are someone I have disagreed with many times but also someone I have always respected. The former governor of Massachusetts is someone in the primary campaign that I found myself agreeing with but also someone I could never respect. Do you want someone whose love of self is greater than his love of country so close to the Presidency? He has proven that his loyalty lies as deep as his own grip on power. I know you will do the right thing for your campaign and for our country. We are living in the most challenging time of my 44 years on this earth and we are facing many dangers as a nation. These are dangers that challenge our republic and our way of life. They are political, economic, and spiritual. We desperately need principled men and women to lead us. I believe you are one of them and that the former governor of Massachusetts is not.
May God bless you and may He bless the United States of America.
